When you run Calendar Magic for the first time, it is important for you to specify your country and city or town via the menu bar item Options > Location.
If your town or city is not in Calendar MagicÆs database, choose one nearby in the same time zone. On request, additional towns and cities can be added to Calendar Magic's worldwide locations database.
The country and location you have chosen is always displayed near the foot of the main Calendar Magic screen. Also shown are current local sunrise and sunset times, adjusted for DST if applicable.
A red or orange diamond at the top right-hand corner of the main screen output text-box indicates that one or more of your set reminders is imminent. Red indicates the existence of a set reminder for the current date and orange indicates the existence of a set reminder less than one week away.
The red or orange diamond, indicating imminent reminders, may be temporarily hidden by left-clicking it. To redisplay it, use the menu bar item Reminders > List Reminders or the keyboard key combination Ctrl+L.
For access to the Help file press the F1 function key at any time. Alternatively, use the menu bar item Help > General Help.
To view a summary of the effects of the various menu bar items, click the menu bar item Help > Menu Bar Summary.
Calendars may be displayed using Saturday, Sunday or Monday as the first day of each week. Use the menu bar item Options > Calendar to indicate your preference.
For the various supported calendar systems, you may create either full year calendars (Calendars > Year Calenders) or single month calendars (Calendars > Month Calendars).
Many of the command buttons throughout Calendar Magic have tool-tips associated with them to explain their purpose. To see the tool-tip (if it exists) for a command button, hover your mouse cursor above the button.
The F11 function key may be pressed to produce an ôenlarged viewö of any lengthy output produced by Calendar Magic. You can also press the F11 key again to exit from "enlarged view".
The Esc key may be used as an alternative to clicking the ôMain Screenö command button on a form or pressing the Alt+M keyboard key combination.
Flexible options are available for personalised colouring of Calendar Magic screens. These are accessed through the menu bar item Options > Colour.
There is a checkbox available from the menu bar item Options > Calendar for turning off and on the display of the Julian Day value on the main screen.
As with any application program, it is sensible to make regular backup copies of key data files. Consult the Help file for more detailed information.
Calendar Magic makes extensive use of drop-down lists (combo boxes) of items. You must left-click an item to select it û typing in its name will not work.
If you are copying a calendar to another application, remember to format the calendar using a fixed width font such as Courier New. This will ensure that the correct vertical alignment of items is maintained.
Various special keyboard key combinations may be used in Calendar Magic. The menu bar item Help > Special Keys Summary will display them.
To perform date conversions among the supported calendar systems and to generate many other date related facts, use the menu bar item Dates > Date Conversions.
The Calendar Comparison facility (Calendars > Calendar Comparison) allows you to set up two calendar systems side-by-side and to compare them on a month-by-month basis.
ôBefore and Afterö (Dates > Before and After) supports the calculation of the date y years m months w weeks d days before or after a given date.
In ôBefore and Afterö (Dates > Before and After), in order to provide consistent results, working backwards is done in the order days, weeks, months and years, while working forwards is done in the order years, months, weeks and days.
For ôDays between Datesö (Dates > Days between Dates) you may create a text file, localhols.dat, containing the dates of ônon-businessö days, for example local holidays in your country.
Various types of planning calendars may be generated by Calendar Magic via the menu bar item Calendars > Planning Calendars. These include bankers' calendars, calendars with day of year numbers, calendars with ISO week numbers, day list calendars and fiscal calendars.
The menu bar item Dates > Regnal Dates may be used to convert British sovereign regnal dates to historical Julian or Gregorian form, as appropriate.
You can list the dates of observed days in any year for any one of over 230 countries using the menu bar item Dates > Observed Days. If you notice any errors, please contact EuroSoft.
Religious festival dates may be listed using the menu bar item Dates > Religious Festivals for various religious faiths -- Baha'i, Buddhist, Chinese, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Orthodox and Sikh. If you notice any errors, please contact EuroSoft.
When a Religious Festivals or Observed Days list is generated, the relevant output data is stored in the CSV (Comma Separated Variable) text file results.csv. In addition, the output data is also stored in the text file newrems.txt in a format supporting the easy creation of reminders for these special days.
You may create date related reminders for events (birthdays, anniversaries, meetings etc.). Reminders may be updated and/or deleted, and out-of-date reminders are automatically purged and added to the text file purged.dat.
Reminders may be imported from other programs into Calendar Magic using the Import Reminders utility available on the Reminder Utilities screen. To bring up this screen, use the menu bar item Reminders > Reminder Utilities or press the Ctrl+U keyboard key combination.
Reminders may be exported from Calendar Magic to the text file myrems.txt using the Export Reminders utility available on the Reminder Utilities screen. To bring up this screen, use the menu bar item Reminders > Reminder Utilities or press the Ctrl+U keyboard key combination.
A Quick Notes facility with 15 tabbed sheets is provided for miscellaneous plain text items, entered through the keyboard or pasted from the Windows clipboard.
The names on the 15 Quick Notes tabs may be changed. If the tab name to be changed is not in the ôfront rowö, click on it to bring it to the front and then double-click the tab name and provide a new name when prompted.
The Time Calculator (Time > Time Calculator) may be used to perform simple arithmetic on times. Times may be added or subtracted, and a time may be multiplied or divided by a positive number.
The "What Time is it in?" facility (Time > What Time is it in?) supports the calculation of the current time and date at more than 8000 locations throughout the world.
In ôWhat Time is it in?ö (Time > What Time is it in?) you may use your own personal selection of favourite countries and locations instead of Calendar MagicÆs worldwide locations database. Consult the Help file for details.
The Factor Calculator (Utilities > Factor Calculator) may be used to find the prime factors of integers up to 60 digits in length. It may also be used to find the HCF and LCM of up to 20 integers.
If a factorisation (Utilities > Factor Calculator) is taking too long, the execution of factor.exe may be terminated by a user via the Windows Task Manager (use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to invoke). Calendar Magic is able to detect such an event and displays an appropriate message.
The Geometry Calculator (Utilities > Geometry Calculator) may be used to evaluate key attributes (area, perimeter, volume, etc.) of various 2D and 3D geometric objects.
When object attribute values are calculated in the Geometry Calculator, the colour of label text associated with calculated results changes to red, in order to distinguish more clearly between data input and calculated results.
In the Geometry Calculator, to copy the value of any ôgreyed outö attribute to the clipboard, left-click the corresponding label description (this actually works for all attribute values).
In the Geometry Calculator, any input value may be specified as a simple arithmetic expression using not more than one of the arithmetic operators + - * / and ^ representing respectively addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and raising to a power.
When working in degrees in the Geometry Calculator, tool-tips are created during the calculation process for all enabled text-boxes displaying angle values. Each tool-tip shows the corresponding decimal angle value converted to degrees, minutes and seconds.
Calendar Magic is "freeware" and may be distributed, without prior permission, provided that no alterations are made to any file contained within the product.
To tabulate the weekdays on which a specified Gregorian date d/m occurs over a range of years, use the menu bar item (Dates > Date Detective).
To find, for example, the months in which the thirteenth of the month falls on a Friday, over a specified range of years, use the menu bar item Dates > In Which Months?.
"This is your life" information (Dates > This is Your Life) may be displayed, including the day of the week on which you were born, the number of days you have so far lived, your Zodiac sign, some biorhythm data, and your date of birth in other calendar systems.
Special Julian to Gregorian change-over calendars may be displayed (Calendars > Special Calendars) for 18 different European countries.
To list when the calendar for each of the supported calendar systems commences in any specified Gregorian year, use the menu bar item Dates > New Year's Days.
Data for various astronomical events may be generated (Utilities > Sun and Moon Data) including sunrise, solar noon and sunset times, moonrise and moonset times, phases of the moon, equinoxes and solstices, and solar and lunar eclipses. Yearly solar and daylight charts may also be created for any location in Calendar Magic's database.
Using the menu bar item (Utilities > Global Distances), you may calculate the distance between any two of more than 8000 locations across the world.
The Global Distances capability (Utilities > Global Distances) shows the latitude and longitude of any selected location. The country code and ISO 3166-1 code are also displayed.
A Unit Converter is available (Utilities > Unit Converter) for converting among over 1700 traditional and metric units in 83 different categories including length, area, volume, mass, temperature, time, velocity, energy, power, pressure, computer storage etc.
Two scientific calculators are provided via the Utilities menu. The Expression Calculator supports the use of normal (infix) expressions and the stack based Scientific Calculator the use of RPN (Reverse Polish Notation) based input.
When using the Expression Calculator or Scientific Calculator, hover your mouse above any command button to see an explanation of its effect.
The Expression Calculator supports user defined variables and user defined functions of one variable.
When using the Expression calculator, after calculating the values of various expressions and defining some variables and functions, the ôSaveö button may be used to save a ôsession historyö in a text file with the extension .shf.
Explanatory comments may be inserted in Expression Calculator input, any text starting with the character ' being ignored.
For calculating the due date of a pregnancy and other pregnancy related dates, a Pregnancy Calculator is available (Utilities > Pregnancy Calculator).
A Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) calculator is provided (Utilities > BAC Calculator) based on the recommendations of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Any BAC value calculated by the Blood Alcohol Content calculator is approximate and should never be used to determine whether you are legally sober or fit to drive a car etc.
Calendar Magic incorporates an alarm clock, reaction timer and stopwatch, all available from the Time drop-down menu.
Magic squares of any order from 3 to 100 may be generated via the menu bar item Utilities > Magic Squares.
Lengthy output from Calendar Magic may be printed to any attached printer using the Print button on any screen or the Ctrl+P keyboard key combination. VBGoldÆs Smart Print control is used to provide highly flexible printing capabilities.
Output from Calendar Magic may be copied to another application via the Windows clipboard using the usual Ctrl+A , Ctrl+C, Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V keyboard commands.
To display an analysis of the Gregorian 400-year cycle plus various related facts, use the menu bar item Calendars > Gregorian Analysis.
Users interested in the Islamic arithmetical calendar may choose one of eight different variations by means of the menu bar item Options > Calendar. The correlation constant for Mayan and Aztec dates may also be set via the same menu item.

A quick way to list your set reminders, when the main screen is visible, is to use the Ctrl+L keyboard key combination.
In Calendar Comparison (Calendars > Calendar Comparison), to terminate any unacceptably long operation, use the Ctrl+T keyboard key combination.
In Quick Notes, use Ctrl+F to find text and Ctrl+R to find and replace text. The F3 function key may also be used to repeat any find operation.
In Quick Notes, use the F12 function key to move to the next tabbed sheet and Shift+F12 to move to the previous tabbed sheet.
Many input data items in Calendar Magic have "sticky" values. The values of such data items are preserved for future use until subsequently updated.
Checks for imminent reminders (and the provision of audio and visual warnings when reminders are imminent) are performed whenever Calendar Magic is started and, if Calendar Magic is running, at one second after midnight each day. The latter is required by users who do not switch off their PCs and who keep Calendar Magic permanently running in the background.
When using the Scientific Calculator, you can clear any displayed error message by pressing the keyboard Esc key.
In the Scientific Calculator, to copy any result to the Windows clipboard simply left-click it in the calculatorÆs main display.
The ôSolar Chartö command button on the Sun and Moon Data form may be used to create a 1-year plot of sunrise, solar noon and sunset times for any specified year and location. Any solar chart created is automatically copied to the Windows clipboard as a bitmap and stored as an image in the file SolarChart.bmp in the folder in which Calendar Magic is installed.
The ôDaylight Chartö command button on the Sun and Moon Data form may be used to create a 1-year plot of numbers of daylight hours for any specified year and location. Any daylight chart created is automatically copied to the Windows clipboard as a bitmap and stored as an image in the file DaylightChart.bmp in the folder in which Calendar Magic is installed.
In the Unit Converter, the definitions of computer storage units are in conformance with an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard. According to this standard, the prefixes kilo, mega, giga, tera, peta and exa are to be used for powers of 1000, whereas the prefixes kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi, pebi and exbi are to be used for powers of 1024.

You can personalise the Favourites menu, to show the Calendar Magic items you use frequently, via Options > Favourites.
If you receive an "invalid property value" error on starting Calendar Magic, the most likely reason is that the font "Courier New" is not installed on your PC.

The Financial Calculator ôGeneral Paymentsö routine solves the equation connecting a present value PV, regular fixed payments PMT, a periodic interest rate r% for n periods, and a final value FV, for any one of the five variables involved. Positive values of PV, PMT and FV represent money you receive, whereas negative values represent money you pay out.
